  • Indonesia’s Ambassador to Qatar Deddy Saiful Hadi has expressed high hopes of stronger ties between his country and Qatar. He was speaking to reporters yesterday in a buildup to Indonesia’s 67th Independence Day celebrations on Friday. The Proclamation of Indonesian Independence was read at 10am on Friday, August 17, 1945. There are 37,567 Indonesian nationals presently resident in Qatar.

Ambassador Hadi said that there is scope for even better relations between Indonesia and Arab countries and “I have taken it upon myself to ensure a closer relationship between Qatar and Indonesia”. He said that Indonesia has a lot of potential that Qatar could explore, saying: “Qatar is prosperous and always looking for investment opportunities in different sectors. Indonesia has great capability as a viable partner as we have recently become a member of the G20. Our gross domestic product (GDP) is ranked 14th in the world, amounting to over $900bn.

”He said that there are plans to invite Qatar’s businessmen to Indonesia to explore investment opportunities, notably in tourism, mining, real estate as well as agriculture sectors. “I have plans to invite Qatar’s businessmen to Indonesia’s annual international trade expo, which is coming up in October 17-21 in Jakarta. “We know that Qatar is looking for foreign investment opportunities in agriculture to ensure its food security, especially with its investment in Kenya, Sudan and more recently, Australia.

So, we are keen in fostering partnerships in this regard. ”Ambassador Hadi said that Indonesia has in abundance many agricultural products, such as rice, tea and coffee. “We are also hoping to open investment avenues in the real estate sector, which is booming presently in Qatar, especially with the infrastructural development expected to be in place before the World Cup in 2022,” he stated. Ambassador Hadi said that Indonesia now produces goods ranging from the smallest items, like nails, to massive objects such as aircraft.“

Indonesia has many things that Qatar can find useful, ranging from good quality wood to ready-made doors and windows, building materials as well as other products such as clothing, shoes, interior decorations as well as arts and crafts. ”The envoy disclosed that he is already speaking directly to a number of real estate companies for business co-operation in that sector. Speaking about the Indonesian community in Qatar, Ambassador Hadi noted that Indonesians in Qatar have “good lives and are happy”.“ As expatriates, we are looking for better life, at the same time we are also contributing to the development of Qatar, so it is a mutual relationship where we all benefit,” he noted.
