DOHA VODAFONE Qatar will hold the first ‘Indie Fikra: Appathon 2012’ contest in Qatar during the QITCOMQatar ICT conference and exhibition, which will be held at the Qatar National Convention Center from March 5
The competition, a mobile applications developmant challenge, is being organised in partnership with the QITCOM.
The Appathon 2012 contest will bring together talent from all over Qatar to compete for prizes and inclusion in ictQATAR’s coveted Dajtala start-up incubation programme.
During the competition, teams will code and create working demonstrations for new mobile applications using Android, Blackberry or iOS platforms.
The competing teams will be required to create one of the following types of applications: Apps in Arabic, Apps for Women, Apps for Games or Apps for Al Sadd Fan Club.
The teams will have 48 hours from 12pm on March 5 till 11:59 am on March 7 to complete a working demonstration of their application.
Following the 48-hour coding marathon, teams will present their applications to a team of experts, made up of representatives from Vodafone Group and Vodafone Qatar.
Names of the winners will be announced at a press conference in the QITCOM Innovation Center later on 7 March.
Commenting on the competition, Head of Interactive and Innovation at Vodafone Qatar Khalifa Saleh Haroon said, “We are excited to partner with QITCOM this special and unique innovation. We’ve created ‘Indie Fikra: Appathon 2012’ to develop and encourage the entrepreneurial spirit in Qatar.
We’re also excited that the teams will have the opportunity to test-drive alpha versions of the apps on Vodafone’s fast 3G data network. “ Chairman of QITCOM organising committee Ali al Khulaifi said, “Qatar’s ICT industry is experiencing rapid growth and development.
At the core of this growth are many entrepreneurs in the country who inspire us regularly with their new ideas and forward- looking business models.
‘Indie Fikra: Appathon 2012’ is an excellent opportunity for Qatar’s best developers to showcase their talents and create mobile applications that may change the world. We are grateful to Vodafone Qatar for partnering with us to drive innovation in Qatar.” To take part in ‘Indie Fikra: Appathon 2012’, participants must be a resident of Qatar and at least 18 years of age, have a new idea for a mobile application in one of the provided categories, have the capability, with a team, to build a smartphone application of their idea in 48 hours for either the BlackBerry, Android or iOS operating systems, have a laptop with all the software, accessories and equipment needed to code application, including any tools provided by BlackBerry, Android or Apple through their developer portals and understand that Appathon 2012 will be filmed and that by participating in the competition they agree to have their developer story recorded and image used. The teams must register on the Vodafone Qatar website at www.vodafone.com.qa/app athon no later than February 25.
The event will be webcast live to Vodafone Qatar’s booth at QITCOM.
